And It Don't Matter What You Say? Are You Tough Enough To Play The Game They Play?

Or will you do your time and fade away? I've used that one before, it's Springsteen's "Jackson Cage." It's pretty much where the Chargers are at right now. I know I was even more brief than usual last week, but I know that I said if they won against the Titans that the fans would be amped up tomorrow night. A lot is made of the atmosphere at Sofi, but I do think those borderline fans would be more enthusiastic if they weren't pretty sure the Bolts would underachieve in those big spots. Winning on Sunday sets them up for a chance tomorrow. Then they have a chance against a team that beat them by a point. Of course, all the focus will be on the Brothers Harbaugh, but that's for next week.

I remember in 2018 thinking that while the team had been rolling going into that Sunday Night game at Pittsburgh that we really hadn't beaten a good team yet. Yes, we got the benefit of an uncalled hold on a touchdown, but they stepped it up with guys like Jackson in the lineup and proved to be at least a true playoff team. I was on record during the first half that night that weren't legit and it was being proven. I was proudly proven wrong even though it took more than one Money Bungler field goal to finish the game.

I thought it was hilarious that Harbaugh made Herbert pantomime that they were calling a pass on 4th down. I don't know if that's unusual for coaches, but it does seem quintessentially Harbaugh. Of course, no one has loved a player the way he loves Herbert. I don't love how badly that play was blocked, but love how "Football Justin" has been unlocked.

Do we have the talent to really do some damage? We've had the talent in the past and not the coaching. I have no doubt that Hortiz did indeed try to get Herb some help at WR. It's nice that Mike Williams caught a TD from Mr. Unlimited and of course I would have loved to see him back with us. It's not like Dissly deserves #81 anyway. But we don't know what the cost was. I also have no idea why we are still paying Easton Stick. I know Herb loves him but there was a reason we traded for a true #2 QB. I know interior linemen aren't available midseason though they were a lot better last week than against the Saints. I think Harbaugh let it slip out that Zion Johnson had a high ankle sprain which may have made him shittier than was his fault. Pipkins was out at Salyer looked infinitely better. But Pipkins was starting again in practice with a wrap on his ankle. It's hard to know whether Harbuagh and Hortiz are truly content with the guys we have or if he's just coaching them all up to get the most out of them. We know they've made the most out of the money they had, that's for sure. Fulton will be back. It sucks to watch our tight ends drop passes and know that, along with Bozeman, we need an upgrade. But I trust these guys. My expectations for this year were to get back to the playoffs and not implode once we did. I know this is Year One, but the goal of course is to win it all at some point. If it doesn't happen with this coach and QB, I will concede that Justice Isn't Coming. It may, but not in my lifetime.

The Bengals can be taken, that's for sure. We play it close with almost every one. That's always been our thing, even before Harbaugh got here. But not "Chargerging" is why he was brought in. I still have reservations about Dicker. He hasn't nailed a true clutch kick in my estimation. Jacksonville isn't too far in my rear mirror and there was another big one this year. I don't worry too much about the extra points. But the only way to prove you are clutch is to prove you are clutch. Nick Folk has been tormenting us forever and missed a big kick last week.

I was able to see a screening of Animal House, which is still as central to my identity as watching Dan Fouts. It was for Tim Matheson's memoir, Damn Glad To Meet You. I just started it but have to say it's really good. I completely forgot this line and mentioned to him during the book signing that it would make a great title for a follow up. I did get a photo with him, which I will eventually post. It's sad that he's 76 and me 53 and it looks completely opposite but I'll subvert my vanity.

Anyway, let's leave it all on the field tomorrow and prove to everyone that we matter. I know I need a little proving to as well.

Let's Take The Cheese.

JIC,

RLW
