Kansas City here we come. It's been a very emotional week, FAITHFUL READER, and for once it has nothing to do with the Chargers. This installment of Justice Is Coming is dedicated to my father-in-law, Kenneth Adler.
As for the Bolts, Sunday was the second time in three weeks that I was convinced we would lose the game. The offense was even worse than it had been against the Ravens in the second half. We still also seem to get no flags. If we do, they get picked up. McConkey was hit in the head on the same play in which he hurt his knee. There must be more to the DJ Chark story since no one but McConkey did anything for the second consecutive week. There was one throw to Johnston short of the sticks that was mind boggling. The problem with Ladd being the only weapon is of course that he takes a beating. Herbert ended up with sacks since no one was open downfield. Roman claims he'll stick with the run more this week in Arrowhead. It's crazy to hear that since in the beginning that's all he called. As Herbert has gotten healthier, he's called more passes. I'm not a strategist but it doesn't seem like the patterns are all that inventive. I don't expect Ben Johnson-level stuff but can't expect the defense to get four picks this week.
I do believe we can win at KC. It's been a while since we had a meaningful win against them. The 2018 game is the one 13-point lead they've blown since Mahomes became the starter. Of course, we were also the opponent in his first game. I don't think I imagined they'd be 3 out of 4 in Super Bowls after the opener at Stub Hub that year, but here we are. I know what our playoff odds are right now. I know Denver keeps winning but we have them in two weeks. But I also know we need this game right now to prove something. The fucking Raiders should have beaten them the week after the Panthers should have. I think we need this game much more than them. The question is will we play like it.
As much as I wish Pipkins would get benched at this point, maybe the run blocking picks up. Vidal had a nice run, but then disappeared.
A loss means we have figure out why we can't beat these guys and look towards the Tampa game. I choose to believe this team is ready to take an important step Sunday night.
I hope they prove me right.
