I apologize, FAITHFUL READER. I am not proud to be posting Opening Day this late. I have been busy at work trying to finish my second book, but am still as focused on the season as always. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is. Every year is different than the last even though it doesn't always seem like it. My wife, now of 20 fucking years, laughs when I say each season that I am not going to let something I cannot control have this much of an effect on my mood. I guess if you are looking for positive signs with the Chargers it's that they have disappointed so many times that the experts aren't hyping them up. I saw Tom Krasnovic mention they great "luck" they've had at QB over the years. I don't know if anyone would call the Chargers lucky, but they have not capitalized having great QBs over the years. It's fucking awful that Dan Fouts has to say that he is a part of the history of "Chargering." But unless they ever win a ring, that's how it will be.
They didn't maximize paying Herbert a rookie contract even though it was clear instantly that he was a franchise player. Now we have stars at many positions but not a ton of depth. That's been the case for ages.
I can rant all I want about Staley playing Mike Williams in Denver, but it's a new year. I hope he doesn't give us more shit to complain about. Whenever that first loss of the season comes, and I hope it's later rather than sooner, it won't hurt as much as the final one. The only thing that matters is trying to have that one season that doesn't end in a loss.
J.C. Jackson will be a nice story if he does anything at all. Spiller is inactive and Henley and Rumph are injured. After watching "All In," I assume Kellen More is familiar with the Michael Scott "I Don't Like That" and "I Am Ready To Be Hurt Again" memes. Lets' hope we don't have to break them out today.
It's great we are retiring both Joiner and Winslow's numbers at half. The Miami connections are obvious. The biggest issue with the Chargers was (and has always been) the lack of a killer instinct. If they go up, they let up and it usually comes back to haunt them. Third quarters last year, especially in Jacksonville, were awful. Staley hasn't backed off the playoff choke though I'd still argue the game was lost by playing starters the week before.
It's about an hour until kickoff and I'm going to shower and grab that first beer.
I posted two tunes today, one by Jeannie C. Riley, most famous for "Harper Valley, PTA." I think she was a Cowboys fan, but I doubt she had a choice. It's still an appropriate song for today. The second is Government Fucking Mule playing a ZZ Top classic.
We'll see if the Bolts have any "dogs" on the team today. The KC lineman everyone was talking about false starting did the same thing in Jacksonville, but he still needs to keep his head. I can't even comment on his behavior at his brother's playoff loss.
Speaking of "dogs," it was nice to see Brandon Siler in the Florida "Swamp Kings" Netflix doc. He had a great 2009 season for the Chargers until the second playoff implosion to the Jets. Actually, I don't know how he did that day. It's all a sad blur.
Bolt the fuck up or shut the fuck up,
